With respect for the listener, and from the perspective that it is better to apply a recommended course of therapy than it is to comply with an ordered course, the goal here is not to provide specific answers about your drug therapy, but rather to help you generate the questions that will empower you in this, to work with your healthcare team. Toward that end, there will be weekly podcasts, very often with guests who will be "the people".
Donald J. Schoeff, R.Ph.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Purdue University.
My forty years of experience as a druggist cover a broad range of settings, including community pharmacies, consultant work in long-term care, psychiatric center pharmacy director, a brief stint in mail-order pharmacy, and in the acute care hospital setting, serving at various times as clinical coordinator, code team member and staff pharmacist. The common thread throughout these years and settings has been an emphasis on patient education.
Intertwined through these years of pharmacy practice, I have also had the privilege of serving as a soccer coach (I never played the game), basketball coach (I loved and attempted to play the game), a middle school science teacher and an adjunct teacher of general chemistry at a community college.
Shared Decision Making & Evidence-Based Practice.
These modern medicine ideas embrace the idea of the patient participating in their own care, in collaboration with their healthcare team. The goal here is to help the patient get in the game, to understand their medications - so that they can own their treatment and work with their physician, pharmacist and all of their healthcare team.
So let's quit pretending that we are. How the medications affect you may be completely different than your friend or loved one. Along with your doctor and your healthcare team, this is about the journey to find the right med at the right dose and the right time...for YOU. And just like you, this may well change.
